Lattice Training: Everything you need to know

Lattice Training is a UK-based company designed to help climbers of all levels reach their full potential. Beginner, intermediate, and expert climbers alike have found tremendous improvements working with their knowledgeable coaches. No matter your experience, hiring a Lattice coach can take your climbing to the next level.

Coaches Tom Randall and Ollie Torr have a combined climbing experience of over 36 years! They’ve coached Great Britain’s national climbing team and have helped others climb some of the hardest grades in the world.

Lattice Training boasts over 20 coaches with specialties in flexibility, education, nutrition, and climbing. It also offers instructional YouTube videos and informative podcasts with climbers around the globe.

The founders of Lattice Training have dedicated their lives to climbing and want to share their knowledge with the world. As climbers, first, they understand the desire to hone one’s craft and be the best they can be.

Tom Randall

Tom Randall is co-founder of Lattice Training and has been climbing for nearly three decades! He has broken records and completed first ascents as a professional climber, so he knows a thing or two.

He has spent 20 years coaching, during which time he was Great Britain’s Junior Coach and Senior Team manager. His passion for climbing is evident in his efforts to help others train and progress in climbing.

Tom has sent some of the hardest grades in the sport. Those included are the first ascents of Century Crack, 5.14b (8c), and The Kraken, V13 (8B). As part of Wide Boyz with Pete Whittaker, they have sought out the world’s hardest crack climbs.

The pair also broke the speed record known as the Brown-Whillans Day Out. It includes a massive 31 pitches covering three different crags in the UK!

Although Tom has completed a lifetime of climbing achievements, he remains ambitious! His goals are to climb 5.14d (9a) sport, and trad climb beyond 9a.

Somebody with as much love for the sport as Tom is the perfect person to help guide your climbing.

Ollie Torr

Ollie Torr is the other co-founder of Lattice Training and has been dedicated to specialise as a climbing coach since 2012. His knowledge and qualifications are hard to beat when looking for coaching!

Ollie went to school for an undergrad in Sports Science and obtained a Masters in Strength and Conditioning.

As a Level 3 personal trainer and Mountain Training Development Coach, he can help you pursue your climbing goals!

Ollie has been climbing for over 16 years and has sent climbs up to 5.14b (8c) and V13 (8B). He has coached junior and senior athletes, including the GB National Climbing Team and others who project the hardest grades in climbing.

Ollie uses his passion for sports science, behavioral science, and performance psychology to fuel his coaching techniques.

He enjoys addressing each client as an individual and figuring out a training plan catered specifically for them.

Ollie is also an ambitious climber who wishes to improve his climbing grades to handle harder multi-pitches.

As an adventurer of big climbs, he plans to tackle big walls worldwide.

Lattice coaching includes individualised programs to help climbers all of experience levels. Not sure about trusting them yet?

Climbers can choose from two coaching options when booking a session with Lattice. You don’t need to be in the UK to reap the benefits of their expertise; they offer remote sessions!
Each plan is 100% customised to your individual climbing goals. They include easy-to-follow sessions via the Lattice Training app with unlimited plan edits.

Plus, you receive one-on-one support from a remote coach.

Performance training plan

The performance training plan targets those with specific climbing goals. Whether you want to climb your first 5.12 or send your first V8, the performance plan can help.

This plan is built around 4-week blocks, so your training can reflect your progress.

Flexibility training plan

The flexibility training plan aims to increase your climbing flexibility. Lattice will complete an assessment and create a customised plan based on your goals.

More training services!

Lattice also offers training plans for targeted climbing improvement. These plans are designed for long-term training goals and can be delivered in 6-, 12-, or 24-week blocks.

Each program suggests the climber should be at a level of at least V4 or 5.10+. If you’re not there yet, consider one of the Performance Training Plans!

  • The Bouldering Training Plan focuses on strength and power.
  • The Sport Climbing Training Plan focuses on strength and endurance.
  • The Fingerboard Training Plan focuses on finger strength and upper body conditioning.
  • The Home Training Plan focuses on your home training setup.

Assessments

If a training plan feels wrong for you, check out their Remote Climbing Assessment. Perform the testing and send your results while Lattice coaches pinpoint the areas of strength and weakness in your climbing.

You’ll need access to some equipment for the testing, so make sure your home or gym has it all. Here is the equipment specified by Lattice that you’ll use:

  • 20mm flat edge (e.g. Lattice Training Rung or Beastmaker 1000)
  • Pull-up bar
  • Weighing scales
  • A means for adding weight: a weight belt or climbing harness, sling or Lifting Pin, a carabiner, and weights*.
  • A pulley system for removing weight: a climbing harness, a pulley device (e.g. Petzl Partner), a sling or Lifting Pin, 3 carabiners, 2m length of rope, and weights*.
  • Dumbbells (typically, 10-50kg in 2.5kg increments)
  • TRX or rings
  • A Flex Mat or measuring tape (and potentially an extra set of hands to use it)

Lattice Training YouTube channel

Lattice Training’s YouTube channel has a variety of training and entertaining content. Although customised training is offered on their website, you can find valuable tips to help you climb stronger.

They have a whole list of topics to help you, ranging from staying injury-free to breaking through climbing plateaus. More content includes core workouts, warm-up routines, and even help selecting the right pair of climbing shoes.

Think of Lattice’s YouTube channel as a collection of everything related to climbing training. With their free collection, you can break through plateaus, improve your footwork, and stay injury-free.
